Advanced Review – Uncorrected Proof

Issue: February 1, 2011

First Grave on the Right.

Jones, Darynda (Author)

Feb 2011. 320 p. St. Martin’s, hardcover, $21.99. (9780312662752).

Charley Davidson’s police-officer father and uncle began consulting her for help in solving murders when she was five years old. Charley has a special gift—she sees and talks to the victims. Her job is to point the recently departed to the light, but those who have been murdered want her to make sure their killers are caught. Charley’s latest clients-from-beyond are three personable lawyers, all murdered by the same person at nearly the same time. When she’s not helping ghosts with the ultimate closure, Charley is trying to figure out who her sizzling-hot dream lover is.

The manuscript for this sassy, sarcastic, sexy novel won the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart for Best Paranormal Romance. Now Jones’ wickedly witty debut will delight aficionados of such humorous paranormals as Casey Daniels’ Pepper Martin Mysteries (Don of the Dead, 2006; The Chick and the Dead, 2007; Tombs of Endearment, 2007) and Dakota Cassidy’s Accidental Friends series (The Accidental Werewolf, 2008; Accidentally Dead, 2008; The Accidental Human, 2009). Librarians will want to be on the lookout for the next book in Jones’ series, Second Grave on the Left (2011).

The Joy of Audiobooks

Dec 30 2010, 6:02 am in , , , ,

As an avid reader, I really enjoy audiobooks. With audiobooks, I can still “read” while driving, exercising, staring off into space. (I’m a writer.) It helps me keep up with my ever-growing and overwhelming TBR pile. (I’m trying to learn to speed read as well.)

The one drawback of audiobooks is, well, the audio. The speaker’s voice. Every once in a while, I’ll pick up an audiobook that is absolutely ruined by the reader. Like in everyday life, some people’s voices are….for lack of a better phrase….annoying.

So when I found out that the FABULOUS Lorelei King <http://www.loreleiking.com> was the reader for First Grave on the Right, I went all fan-girly and squealed. Only a little, but still. I was so excited, I wrote to her agent to tell her how much I loved her work. (She also reads for authors like Janet Evanovich and Patricia Briggs, just to name a few.) She wrote me back herself (!!!) to thank me, and a friendship was born. (At least in my head. :)

She is absolutely the coolest of the cool. She is gorgeous and talented and has the perfect voice for my MC, Charley Davidson. Behind the scenes are people like producer Laura Wilson and designer Anne Gardner among others. And the folks at St. Martin’s Press/MacMillan Audio have been kind enough to send me a sample of her work for the website.

To hear an excerpt of First Grave on the Right read by Lorelei, click on the audio link on the home page.

And let me know your thoughts!!!
I’m just so thrilled!
